Building Community

Summer Camp was focused on workshops.

  • 21 1-hour workshops (no preparation required from attendees).
  • Provided a relaxed, fun atmosphere with attention to an open, welcoming aesthetic.
  • Offered during lunch over six weeks.
  • Used badges to highlight competencies and facilitate easy reporting.
  • “Certificate of Digital Competency” for attending 8 workshops.
An example of a badge: it's a hexagon that reads, "Gimme Gimme Gimme a Badge After Midnight."
An example of our cheeseball badges (this one for attending the by-request session on badges; the popularity of the badges was one of the most surprising aspects of Summer Camp).

In total, 331 faculty attended at least one workshop, with the vast majority attending at least two. 143 people earned the Certificate of Digital Competency (17 earned an award for Perfect Attendance). We awarded 2018 badges over the six weeks.

After the conclusion of programming, the video archives have been watched hundreds of times.

We are in the final stages of archiving these materials openly.

Post-Camp resources:

  • Weekly “brown bag” lunch discussions in August.
  • Learning Without Walls, a student resource with mirrored versions in Moodle and outside of it.
  • You Got This!, the continuation of Summer Camp’s ethos but in podcast form.
